    Sixty-three percent of the students in the Austin, Texas, school district are Hispanic, and 98% in Brownsville and other towns closer to the border. Yet their heritage is either ignored, downplayed or distorted by many teachers and a number of books. Some teachers still think May 5th is Mexican Independence Day!

    Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the victory over French forces on May 5, 1862 at the Battle of Puebla.
